The Rizzardini family, originally from the Zoldo Valley, has been making high-quality gelato for five generations. The gelato shop in Laufen, on the Salzach River, is located right next to the impressive border bridge built in 1901, which connects the town of Laufen in Germany with the town of Oberndorf in Austria. The gelato of Luca Rizzardini, the current owner, is made fresh daily, without artificial colourings, flavourings or additives. Luca uses high quality ingredients and many regional products for his gelato, as milk and dairy ingredients, fruit, honey, flowers and wild herbs from the region. Of course Vanilla pods come from Tahiti and Madagascar, chocolate from Belgium, hazelnuts from Piedmont, pistachios, almonds, lemons, oranges and tangerines from Sicily and fresh exotic fruit from South America. The bananas and mangoes are ‘fair trade’ certified. Thanks also to his cooperation with the Biosphere Berchtesgadener Land, Luca has excelled in gelato creations using the herbs and products grown there. 2021 its creation ‘Yoghurt Honey Blossoms’ was officially certified, and 2023 a further certification followed for the creation, the ‘Ricotta Honey’ variety. To these flavours were added the sorbets ‘Bitter Wonder’ and ‘Herbal dream’ as well as the special flavour ‘Moorgenuss’. All these ice cream creations with Biosphera products are subject to strict criteria in terms of sustainability and regionality. Luca says: ‘For me it is a real pleasure to create new flavours of gelato using the best natural ingredients from the Biosphere; they are not only a real treat, but indirectly promote the value of our region. The Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere region was internationally recognised as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1990. It is therefore part of a global system of areas that exemplarily depicts all types of landscape in the world, here a section of a natural and cultural landscape in the Alps.
