Eis-café Zanella, Italian tradition since 1973 Sisto Zanella, the founder of this gelato parlour, was one of the first Italian immigrants to move to Sauerland from the small town of Belluno, north of Venice, in 1964. He wanted to open a gelateria, preferably in a smaller town in order to create with it a meeting place for young and old, to see and be seen, and his choice fell on Sassenberg. The town had only 5,000 inhabitants at the time, and the young Italian wanted to win them over with uncompromising quality and an Italian ambience. Sisto knew that he would only have one chance to win over the people of this small Westphalian town, so from the very beginning he focussed on the very best quality ingredients, traditional Italian craftsmanship and a fridge and coffee machine of impressive dimensions from his home country. In addition, his hospitality and his demand for good flavour made Zanella a brand. Zanella means hospitality, relaxation, good entertainment, good food, good coffee - simply ‘Stile di vita italiano’. His son Fabio and his wife Christina shared Sisto's passion for style and quality. They took over the business in 1993 and since then have continued to develop the Zanella business beyond the borders of Sassenberg in the spirit of Sisto Zanella. Their gelato in all its flavours consists only of natural ingredients, starting from fresh eggs, milk and cream. There are no stabilisers or artificial flavourings. All flavours are created by adding fruit or specially roasted hazelnuts, pistachios or spices such as cinnamon or vanilla. They source all of these ingredients from controlled cultivation; the seasonal fruit usually comes from the region or from Italy, just like the nuts. And the chocolate - that's a very special secret of ours. Just like the coffee. Because coffee is a science in itself. And we are committed to the quality standards of Italian baristas. The best coffee roasts are based on the highest possible proportion of Arabica from controlled cultivation.
