Marktstr. 1, 58452 Witten
A parlour with a century of history. It was Giovanni De Lorenzo, who together with his brother had a street gelato business in Santa Margherita Ligure, who took the plunge when he moved to Germany in 1928, where he opened his own parlour in Witten-Ruhr in 1930. Success was immediate, as traditional Italian gelato was an innovative product: it was made fresh, it was light and easy to digest, unlike the very fatty German ice cream of the time. Despite an interruption during the war, when in 1942 the whole family returned to Italy, to their home town of Zoppe' di Cadore, the family business with Maria de Lorenzo together with his 3 children after the death of her husband restarted in Germany 1954 and expanded. Among the various parlours opened by the family, it was the ‘Eis De Lorenzo’ parlour in Witten, that continued the tradition over several generations. Today, the establishment celebrates 95 years in Witten, has fourth-generation family management, is one of the town's historic businesses and is known for the product quality resulting from a long history of gelato making. Since 2024 Manolo Olivier, son of Anna Lazzaris and Dario Olivier (the grandchild of Maria De Lorenzo, the one who started again the business after the 2. World war), has taken over the management. The gelato parlour has now a modern look and a new name ‘Gelateria De Lorenzo’. Alongside the classic flavours of great appeal, the shop window offers new, innovative flavours in seasonal rotation, such as salted caramel, orange cream, mango and, this year, the ‘STRAUSS’ flavour, a raspberry sorbet with pink pepper. Dario Olivier, Manolo's father, is currently vice-president of Uniteis and has been president of the association for two terms. Alongside his work as Gelatiere, he has been a leading figure in the world of gelato for more than 30 years for his many activities to promote and spread its culture in Germany and Europe.
Most recognisable for: Orange Cream, salted caramel and the flavour of teh yera in Germany "Strauss" a delicate raspberry sorbet with pink pepper.
